Cattle Parentage

Our cattle parentage test uses our Bovine 85K SNP panel of approximately 85,000 markers to accurately assign animals to their sire and/or dam.

This can be completed through Parent Allocation, using a list of potential sires and dams provided by the breeder; or through Parent Discovery where an animal’s DNA is tested against all cows and bulls in the breeder’s account to discover the parents.

This service is available for all cattle breeds and is suitable for both commercial producers and seedstock operations. The test can be ordered as a standalone service or in conjunction with a genomic profile, genetic health conditions and traits.

Why perform Parentage Verification?

Parentage testing takes the guesswork out of assigning calves, improves the accuracy of pedigree information, and can save time traditionally spent tagging calves at birth with this information.

Why use a cattle parentage test?

Cattle parentage testing is used to:

Provide a reliable confirmation of pedigree
Match calves from multiple-sire groups to specific bulls
Confirm parentage in reproductive techniques such as AI or Embryo Transfer
Identify sires associated with genetic abnormalities or calving difficulties
Determine which bulls are siring the best heifers, or those that aren’t siring anything at all, and
Increase the accuracy of breeding values.
