Unique partnership brings breakthrough genomic tool to commercial sheep breeders
.webp)
DNA collection is a fundamental part of modern breeding programs, supporting genomic testing for parentage verification, trait analysis and breeding values.
When samples are collected correctly, they provide reliable genetic information that helps breeders make informed decisions and meet breed society and industry requirements.
Weatherbys Scientific enables breeders to collect DNA samples on-farm using approved methods that are practical and scientifically robust. Each collection option is designed to maintain sample integrity from the point of collection through to laboratory analysis, ensuring consistent, high-quality results.
Several DNA sampling methods are available, depending on species, management practices, and testing requirements. Tissue Sampling Units (TSUs) are the preferred method for livestock, offering a fast, hygienic, and highly reliable approach to DNA collection. Alternative options, including hair and semen sampling, are also available where appropriate.
Below is the typical genotyping process for our customers. If you are a new customer to Weatherbys Scientific, please contact us for a copy of our Credit Application and Account Setup forms to complete before submitting your Sample Submission form and samples. These can be sent to hello@weatherbys.com.au
Order your Allflex Tissue Sampling Units (TSUs) and applicators directly from Weatherbys.

Yes, hair samples are accepted for DNA testing. Please note that additional processing is required for hair samples, and this is reflected in an additional fee. Contact us for more information and to order hair card collection kits.
Yes, we can process semen samples for DNA testing. Please note that specialised processing is required, and this is reflected in an additional fee. Contact us for more information.
Please submit whole semen straws for testing. Weatherbys will only accept unused straws.
We recommend allowing the straw to thaw in the fridge after removing it from liquid nitrogen before shipping.
To prevent breakage during transit, please place the straws in empty pen barrels (or similar) with a couple of ice bricks. The semen does not need to arrive to us frozen, the ice helps to reduce exposure to high temperatures and DNA degradation.
